Quitting smoking consist of 2 stages:

  • Overcoming Physical Dependency 

  • Overcoming Psychological Dependaency 

Overcoming Physical Dependency

Use a combination of the followings to help you overcome the physical dependency.

  • Seek help instead of D.I.Y. Get lots of help and get into good quit smoking program.

  • On top of that, use physician-endorsed methods: nicotine replacement and Zyban.

  • Use Aversion therapy -- self-administering a mild electric shock from an ordinary 9 volt battery as one smokes a cigarette.

  • Read some motivation book on quit smoking.

  • Deep Breathing (Do it three times) -  Every time you want a cigarette.

  • Nibble on low calorie foods like celery, apples, cucumber and carrots.

  • Chew gum or suck on cinnamon sticks.

  • After dinner, drink a cup of mint tea or eat a peppermint candy, instead of cigarette.

  • Workout in the Gym.

  • Gradual cut down of the number of sticks of cigarette, don't stop abruptly.

 

Overcoming Psychological Dependency

Use a combination of the followings to help you overcome the psychological dependency.

  • Take deep breath and hold it for 3-5 minutes when there is an urge or a temptation.

  • Learn to say "NO" when offered a cigarette by someone and walk away.

  • Understand the benefits of not smoking and negative effects of "Second Hand Smoke" for the people around, especially your love ones.

  • Tell yourself that you don't need cigarette and you feel good being smoke-free. Tell yourself "YOU CAN STAY SMOKE FREE AND YOU CAN DO IT".
