Herpes is an infection caused by herpes simplex virus 1 or 2. It primarily affects the mouth or genital area.

There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, HSV1 and HSV2

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 - HSV1
Herpes simplex virus type 1 ("HSV1") generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 - HSV2
Herpes simplex virus type 2 ("HSV2") typically only infects those body tissues that lie "below the waistline" and it is this virus that is also known as "genital herpes". Herpes simplex virus type 2 is not usually the virus that causes cold sores, although it can.

An estimation of

50 percent to 80 percent

of the American adult population has oral herpes.

20 percent, over 50 million people,

are infected with genital herpes, and the majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it.

Each year, more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes

In fact, it is more common than diseases like diabetes and asthma

So you're not alone, and you shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed to seek treatment.

To date, there is still no cure. Efforts to develop a vaccine by pharmaceutical companies are ongoing. Until an effective vaccine HSV infection is found, the prevailing approach to treatment continues to be only

 suppressive antiviral therapy... ....

Prevention

Prevention is difficult since the virus can be spread to others when the infected person has no evidence of a current outbreak; however, avoiding direct contact with an open lesion will lower the risk of infection.
People with genital herpes should avoid sexual contact when active lesions are present. Safer sex behaviors including the use of condoms may also lower the risk of infection.

Individuals with active herpetic lesions should also avoid contact with newborns, children with eczema or immunosuppressed individuals as these groups are at higher risk for more severe disease.

In pregnant women with active herpes simplex infection at the time of delivery, a cesarean delivery is recommended to reduce the risk of infecting the newborn.
