Antacids
are available without a prescription and are used primarily for heartburn.
They can provide limited, short-term relief.
H2 blockers
are available over-the-counter and by prescription.
They reduce the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach, but not as much as proton pump inhibitors.
Proton pump inhibitors
are available by prescription. They block the final stage of acid production. They are very effective and can relieve symptoms in most people who have acid reflux disease.
Surgery is generally considered only after all other treatment options have proved to be unsuccessful.
Surgery
Some people with acid reflux disease may need surgery if they have complications or haven't responded well to medical treatment. The standard surgical procedure is called
"Fundoplication".
