What are the causes?
-
Genital warts are spread
by sexual contact with an infected partner and are very
contagious.
-
Warts are passed from person to
person, sometimes indirectly. The time from the first contact to
the time the warts have grown large enough to be seen is often
several months. The risk of catching hand, foot, or flat
warts from another person is small.
1 million new cases of genital warts are diagnosed in the United States each year.
-
In women, the warts occur on the outside and inside of the vagina, on the cervix or around the anus.
-
In men, genital warts are less common. However,
if present, they are seen on the tip of the penis, on the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, or around the anus.
-
In some rare occurrences, genital warts can also
be develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person.
