What are Warts?

Warts are non-cancerous skin growths caused by a viral infection in the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Certain types of HPV cause warts on the genital area (sex organs) and other types cause warts on hands and feet. Of the types that affect the external genital area cause raised external genital warts are not usually linked with cancer. 

 

What are the causes?  

  • Genital warts are spread by sexual contact with an infected partner and are very contagious.

  • Warts are passed from person to person, sometimes indirectly. The time from the first contact to the time the warts have grown large enough to be seen is often several months. The risk of catching hand, foot, or flat warts from another person is small.

1 million new cases of genital warts are diagnosed in the United States each year.

  • In women, the warts occur on the outside and inside of the vagina, on the cervix or around the anus. 

  • In men, genital warts are less common. However, if present, they are seen on the tip of the penis, on the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, or around the anus. 

  • In some rare occurrences, genital warts can also be develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person.
